Sen. Cunningham

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Bill Cunningham is supporting a measure to simplify the college admissions process for high school seniors and community college transfer students.

“High school seniors and community college transfer students already face significant challenges as they navigate their education,” said Cunningham, a Democrat who represents portions of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. “The last thing they need is to be overwhelmed with a complicated admissions process full of unnecessary fees, paperwork, and delays. This bill will make it easier for students, especially those in our communities like Moraine Valley Community College, to pursue higher education without additional barriers.”

Senate Bill 2448 would reduce barriers for students by offering direct admission to qualified applicants at all public institutions of higher education and community colleges that participate in the program. Under the legislation, students would no longer face the burden of repeated application processes or unnecessary application fees, ensuring a smoother transition into postsecondary education. Students registering for classes their senior year of high school would opt-in to the automatic admissions program.

“I want to be clear — college isn’t the only path to success, and we should celebrate all forms of education,” said Cunningham. “Whether it's pursuing a technical degree or starting a business, there are many ways for young people to thrive. But for those who want to attend college, we’re committed to making the process as simple as possible so they can focus on their future, not on bureaucratic hurdles.”

Senate Bill 2448 awaits consideration before the Senate.
